Saunders defends against Lemieux
Billy Joe Saunders from England makes the third defence of his WBO middleweight belt when meets David Lemieux of Canada at the Place Bell, Laval Canada on Saturday night.
Saunders, 28, who has a record of 25-0; 12 and fights from the southpaw stance won the WBO belt on December 19, 2015 when he beat Andy Lee on a majority points decision and then made successful defences against Artur Akavov and Willie Monroe Jr, both on points.
Lemieux, also 28 has an impressive record of 38-3; 33 (an 80% knockout ratio) with his three losses coming against quality fighters like Marco Antonio Rubio (tko 7), Joachim Alcine (md 12) and the Gennady Golovkin (tko 8), who holds the WBA/WBA/IBF middleweight belts.
Lemieux won the IBF middleweight belt when he outpointed Hasson N’Dam N’Jikam over 12 rounds in June 2015 but lost it to Golovkin four months later.
In 2017 he has scored good wins in his last two fights against Curtis Stevens and Marcos Reyes.
Saunders has the toughest fight of his career against Lemieux, but has shown in previous fights that he has a solid chin.
However, he will have to use all his technical ability to stay away from the big punching challenger.
If Saunders can avoid the danger of the powerful Lemieux he could win on a hard-fought points decision.
