A California couple returned to the charred remains of their home on Wednesday after a swiftly-moving wildfire swept through their neighborhood in Ventura County this week.
While digging through the ashes, Don Myers found his wife’s original wedding ring — and decided to propose to his partner, Julie, all over again, getting down on one knee amid the rubble, local ABC affiliate KEYT first reported.
Their 25-year-old son took a photo of the impromptu proposal, capturing the sweet moment Julie accepted the ring.
Julie told The Post that her wedding ring was in a fire safe, but most of what was inside had been reduced to “a glob of thick ash,” so they didn’t initially see it.
Her husband of 28 years continued searching as she stepped for away for a minute.
“When I came back my husband had found it. He did his little proposal,” she said with a laugh.
Julie said she was home alone when the blaze broke out Monday evening, and as the fire was moving quickly, she didn’t have time to get together all of her family’s most priceless possessions.
“I really wish I would’ve got the baby blankets and Christmas ornaments, but I’ll survive it,” she said, adding that they plan to rebuild their home.
“We’re just thankful that we are in a position where our insurance is paying for our hotel. We’re really concerned about all the other people.”
More than 200,000 residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have been forced to flee their homes this week, as firefighters struggle to contain four separate blazes.
