PM Deuba urges left alliance not to provoke Prez

Dec 17, 2017-Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has urged the left alliance not to provoke the President to return the ordinance on the National Assembly election forwarded by the government saying that he was ready to hand over power soon.

PM Deuba has accused CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli of provoking the President not to pass the ordinance arguing that the single transferable voting (STV) system provisioned in the ordinance was unconstitutional.

UML Chair Oli met  President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Friday to discuss matters related to formation of the new government and the fate of the bill. The ordinance is stuck at the President’s Office while the government argues that it would be difficult to form a new Cabinet without the ordinance being endorsed first.

In a meeting at Baluwatar on Saturday morning, Deuba told Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal that he was willing to hand over power soon. “Withholding the ordinance would further delay the process of handing over power,” a source claimed Deuba as telling Dahal in the one-to-one meeting.

Dahal is said to have warned Deuba not to make any political and constitutional appointments including the provincial chiefs without consulting with the major parties.

Former PM Dahal had said important appointments should be made only after consulting with leaders of the major parties especially when the people have given a fresh mandate. “Dahal also warned the PM to consult with major leaders if he was to take any important decision urgently,” said Dahal’s press coordinator Manahari Timilsina. On the occasion, Deuba congratulated Dahal on the victory of the left alliance in the polls, said PM’s senior media expert Govinda Pariyar.
