The world’s biggest battery just switched on after Elon Musk ‘won his bet’

The world’s most powerful battery just switched on – after Elon Musk fulfilled an ambitious pledge to build it in 100 days or offer it for free.
The Powerpack battery in South Australia works with a nearby wind farm to store energy, and provides enough power to light up 30,000 homes.
The battery has a storage capacity of 129 megawatt-hours, around three times that of its nearest rival.

It’s seen as a major test of the reliability of renewable energy in an area of South Australia plagued by high-profile blackouts in recent years.

State premier Jay Weatherill said in a statement, ‘South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy. This is history in the making.’
Tesla said it hoped that the battery would ‘provide a model for future deployments around the world.’
