Fox News Kills Off Jimmy Carter in Report on Oldest Presidents

Fox News incorrectly claimed Sunday that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter had died at the age of 93. It did so while praising another former president, George H.W. Bush, for being the longest-living commander-in-chief in the country’s history.
The report posted to the Fox News website at 1:53 p.m. Sunday afternoon stated that Bush had surpassed late President Gerald Ford by living 93 years and 166 days, one more than the 38th president. But it also stated that both Carter and President Ronald Reagan had died at 93 years old, according to Mediaite.
Carter turned 93 on October 1. Reagan did, in fact, die at 93, in 2004. The article was corrected about an hour and a half later, and the website stated in its correction: “We sincerely regret the error.”

Media organizations have made similar errors about deaths of major figures before. The most recent example came in October, when it was prematurely reported that legendary rock musician Tom Petty had died before he actually did.
Carter did have a scare back in July, when he was taken to a Canadian hospital for dehydration. He was working on a Habitat for Humanity project and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, CNN reported.
Nevertheless, the former Georgia governor is still alive and working. In fact, Carter told The New York Times that he would answer the call if the current president, Donald Trump, asked him to help in diplomatic efforts with North Korea.
Known as a top negotiator in crisis situations, Carter also said he was wary of the current mood and tough talk exchanged by Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“I’m afraid, too, of a situation,” he said. “I don’t know what they’ll do. Because they want to save their regime. And we greatly overestimate China’s influence on North Korea. Particularly to Kim Jong Un. He’s never, so far as I know, been to China,”

Carter added: “And they have no relationship. Kim Jong Il did go to China and was very close to them.”
In October, a University of Georgia professor told a Korean news outlet that Carter actually wanted to visit the North in an attempt to find a peaceful resolution with Kim.
Carter famously met with Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, in 1994 and directly negotiated with him. Later, the Clinton administration approved an aid plan in exchange for the North paring down its nuclear weapons program.
