No alternative to UML-MC merger’ No alternative to UML-MC merger’

Dec 17, 2017-CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that preparations are being made to finalise the unification of his party with the CPN-UML.

Addressing a tea reception organised to congratulate the newly elected left alliance representatives to Federal Parliament and Provincial Assemblies in Kathmandu-5 on Saturday, Dahal said there was no alternative to merging the constituents of left alliance—CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN-UML—as agreed earlier.

“We formed the left alliance because we could not unify the parties before the elections. We have nearly received a two-thirds majority. Now we will finalise the unification process,” he said.

Thanking all the leaders, cadres and voters of both the parties for playing crucial role in securing a majority of electoral constituencies across the country, Dahal hoped for their continued support in the future. He attributed left alliance’s landslide victory to the UML-Maoist Centre fusion, saying that “it would not have been possible without each other’s support”.

The election result has brought along more responsibility for the parties to ensure political stability, development and prosperity.

“We have initiated a new process and got an opportunity to prepare the ground

for a new era of prosperity and socialism. We won’t miss it,” said the Maoist chairman.

Calling the recently held federal parliamentary and provincial assembly elections the milestone for the implementation of the new constitution promulgated after a prolonged struggle, Dahal said the election process was a historic incident for Nepal’s communist movement and political struggle.

The left alliance has won a total of 357 seats at both the levels in the Federal Parliament and Pronvincial Assembly elections. The UML secured 80 out of the total 165 FPTP seats in the House of Representatives, while the Maoist Centre won 36 seats. In the provincial race, the UML has swept 167 seats and Maoist Centre 74 seats.

The Nepali Congress (NC) has won 23 FPTP seats in the HoR and 41 provincial constituencies.
